From May 14 to 18, 2019, the Jesuit Education Secretaries flew into Taipei for their annual meeting.

This year the meeting was focused on: (a) the global event being hosted by Indonesia next year, the II COLLOQUIUM JESEDU JOGJA 2020, where about 500 leaders of Jesuit schools from around the world are expected to congregate in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, and (b) the concrete ways in which the recently announced Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus can be promoted by our schools.

The education secretaries pose with Ms. Susanna Chen Hai-San the Principal and Fr. Paul Sun SJ, Rector of St. Ignatius High School Taipei. From L to R: Adrian Danker SJ (MALAYSIA-SINGAPORE), Lee Sung-Il SJ (JAPAN), Rich McAuliff SJ (MICRONESIA), Baskoro Poedjinoegroho SJ (INDONESIA), Quyen Vu SJ (CAMBODIA), Bert Boholst SJ (TIMOR LESTE), Johnny Go SJ (ASIA PACIFIC), Ari Dy SJ (PHILIPPINES), Tom Renshaw SJ (AUSTRALIA), and Stephen Chow SJ (CHINESE PROVINCE).

The group took the opportunity to visit St. Ignatius High School (徐匯中學), where the education secretaries learned about the school’s flagship formation program called LIFE EDUCATION. The campus tour was capped with a sumptuous Chinese banquet courtesy of the Chinese Provincial, Fr. Stephen Chow SJ.

Apart from the annual reports from the Provinces and the Regions, the meeting featured a discussion on the newly announced Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus. To concretize the conversations, the education secretaries identified what they considered “crucial threats” and “promising opportunities” in their work of education.

These served as the context to the discussion of the UAPs.

Fr. Quyen Vu SJ of Cambodia (extreme left) drew from his personal story as a refugee child who fled Vietnam with his family in the late 70s to share about “Walking with the Excluded.” Fr. Stephen Chow SJ (shown here on the extreme right), using his extensive experience working with the schools of the Chinese Province offered his thoughts on what “Accompanying the Youth” means today. Fr. Ari Dy SJ (seated next to him) offered his take on “Discernment and the Spiritual Exercises” using a Buddhist angle.
Finally, Fr. Tom Renshaw SJ of Australia (leftmost, shown here with Frs. Go and Vu) shared his insights into Pope Francis’ Laudato Si as he discussed the very real challenges facing Jesuit schools in promoting “Caring for Our Common Home (UAP 4).”

The discussions were rich and full of fresh insights that should guide our schools in concretizing these apostolic preferences this decade. The conversations about the UAPs are expected to continue among our schools.

Through a Chinese banquet, the group thanked Fr. Stephen Chow SJ for his twelve years of outstanding service as the Chinese Education Delegate.
Fr. Baskoro presided over the first Eucharist, with Fr. Rich assisting with the reading.
The closing Mass was presided over by the host, Fr. Stephen Chow SJ.

The meeting proceeded smoothly and yielded rich insights. We thank our hosts, Fr. Stephen Chow SJ, and the Jesuit communities of Holy Family Parish and Tien Educational Center in Taipei!
