The Ignatian Initiative for Teacher Excellence (IGNITE) offers resources for Ignatian formation for educators around the world. Its frameworks for the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) and Ignatian Leadership are distinguished by their concrete and practical approaches that Ignatian educators will not only find accessible but also easy to apply in their work.

Today's Mission of Jesuit Education

In light of the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus, the mission of Jesuit education today may be interpreted as the three-fold task of Educating for Purpose, Educating for Depth, and Educating for Reconciliation

Choosing Purpose

The first Universal Apostolic Preference is “Showing the Way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and Discernment.” In today’s world, this first UAP can be interpreted as guiding people to choose their purpose and discover their meaning in life through a journey of seeking God and discerning His Will.

Cultivating Depth

In today’s mission of Jesuit education, “to journey with the youth and to accompany them in the creation of a hope-filled future” means helping our students–more than ever–to learn how to think deeply and critically, how to make sound judgments in the face of so many– often contradictory–claims.

Building Reconciliation

“To walk with the excluded–the poor and the outcasts–in a mission of  justice and reconciliation” necessarily entails “caring for our common home” because the ecological crisis is bound to affect the marginalized most adversely.

Learning by Refraction

This 21st-century approach to Ignatian Pedagogy is based on the book Learning by Refraction: A Practitioner’s Guide to 21st-Century Ignatian Pedagogy by Johnny C. Go and Rita J. Atienza.

LEARNING BY REFRACTION, published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, offers a fresh take on the IPP, curating what’s most helpful from the latest education research and consolidating what has been tried and tested by practitioners of the IPP since its launch in 1993. The ideas in this approach emerged from many conversations wtih experienced Ignatian educators around the world, as well as consultation with education specialists.

Leading with Depth

LEADING WITH DEPTH is a framework for Ignatian Leadership that interprets Ignatian spirituality using selected contemporary leadership theories and principles. It proposes four distinct dimensions for Ignatian Leadership: Reflective Leadership, Listening Leadership, Discerning Leadership, and Missioning Leadership. This approach is distinctly concrete and down-to-earth, and is intended to guide not only leadership development, but also its assessment.

A book of the same title (co-authored by Johnny C. Go SJ and Assunta C. Cuyegkeng) has just been published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press.
