Science

Action Goals

Scientific Method

To appreciate the role of science in one’s daily life and approach real-life situations/problems scientifically.

POSSIBLE INSIGHTS

  • Scientists use their senses to observe (directly and/or indirectly) natural phenomena. They use scientific methods involving the systematic isolation and control of relevant variables to answer questions about these phenomena.
  • Throughout history, science has been a catalyst for progress, change, and revolution.

SUGGESTED REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • How is scientific knowledge generated and validated?
  • Can science provide the answers to all our problems and questions?

To design a scientific way to verify or falsify a hypothesized relationship between two variables (e.g., an experiment).

POSSIBLE INSIGHTS

  • Scientific knowledge is our best educated guesses about phenomena based on all the available data so far.

SUGGESTED REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • How does scientific knowledge change and develop?
Ecosystems

To analyze the interactions of organisms with one another and with their physical environment within an ecosystem and appreciate their impact

POSSIBLE INSIGHTS

  • Energy flows from one organism to another in an ecosystem through complex ecological relationships which can be affected through changes caused by natural processes or human activity.

SUGGESTED REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • How do organisms, including humans, interact with their environment and how do these interactions affect the delicate balance within an ecosystem?
